Bike Taxi Rules: App based bike taxis like Ola, Uber and Rapido will be able to operate in the country’s financial capital Mumbai as well as other big cities of Maharashtra like Thane, Pune, Nagpur. The government has prepared a draft of rules for the entire state. According to Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, these rules will be implemented in two months.

There has been a long wait for making any rules for bike taxis. In a metropolis like Mumbai, bike taxis were running without rules, whereas considering the traffic situation, it could be the best option. However, to bring app-based taxi services like Ola, Uber, Rapido as well as bike taxi services under a uniform rule, the Motor Vehicles Department has prepared a draft of ‘Maharashtra Aggregator Regulation 2024’.

Its presentation was made in a meeting held in the ministry on Tuesday. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said that passenger safety has been given priority in the rules. This is a policy decision, so this rule will be implemented in the next two months after discussing with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Bike taxi will provide employment

After the new draft, bike taxi service will now be started in all the cities of the state including Mumbai-Pune. The main objective of starting bike taxi is employment generation. Through this, employment opportunities will also be created for women. For the safety of women drivers and passengers, it is being considered to install stands to maintain adequate distance between two seats. It is being considered whether these changes will be made through existing companies or by the transport department.

If there is a delay, you will have to pay

‘After booking an app-based taxi for travel, the driver arrives late than the scheduled time…’ The state government’s transport department has now found a solution to such common complaints. If the app-based taxi driver does not arrive within 10 minutes, a fine of Rs 100 will be imposed on the concerned person and this amount will be given to the passenger. This rule has been included in the ‘Maharashtra Aggregator Regulation 2024’.

The draft also includes a rule to pay five times the total penalty amount to the passenger from the concerned company on cancellation of taxi booked for airport, railway station, hospital etc. The transport department has supported this rule and said that its purpose is to prevent unnecessary delay and provide a better experience to the passengers. This draft was presented by Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar.

Strictness on complaints of refusal of fare

There are many complaints of passengers about refusal of service in app-based taxi services. Keeping this in mind, a special provision has been made in this draft. Currently, the company gives the information of the passenger’s destination to the driver in advance, due to which the driver often refuses to take the passenger if the destination is nearby.

To solve this problem, changes will be made in the app so that the driver gets the information of the destination only after the passenger boards the bus. An official said that instead of limiting itself to fines, such cases have been included in the rules so that strict implementation of this is mandatory for all private transport services.
