Citizenship Act S.6A: A five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act.

An important hearing was held in the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday (17 October 2024) on Section 6A of the Citizenship Act. A five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act through an amendment in 1985 to further the Assam Accord.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices Surya Kant, MM Sundresh and Manoj Mishra delivered the majority verdict, while Justice JB Pardiwala dissented. Section 6A was included in the Assam Accord in 1985 to grant citizenship benefits to illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who entered Assam between January 1, 1966 and March 25, 1971.
