Indians living in the US got a big relief today. Indian students and professionals living here on visas and waiting for green cards will no longer have to fear leaving the US. In fact, a Seattle court has indefinitely stayed President Donald Trump’s order to end birthright citizenship.

Criticizing the Trump administration’s order, the Seattle court said Trump was trying to bypass the legal rule to play a “political game” with the Constitution.

The stay, issued by U.S. District Judge John Coughenour, is the second major legal setback to Trump’s sweeping deportation drive aimed at changing U.S. law. A Maryland judge had earlier issued a similar ruling. “It has become clear that for our president, the rule of law is simply an obstacle to his policy goals,” Judge Coughenour said sternly during a hearing in Seattle on Thursday. According to him, the rule of law is something that can be circumvented or simply ignored, whether for political or personal gain.

The judge further said that the rule of law will prevail in this court and under my supervision, no matter what anyone does. The judge further said that the Constitution is not something with which the government can play political games. If the government wants to change the law of birthright citizenship, then it needs to amend the Constitution itself.
