The government aims to make only Hallmark gold available for sale in all 766 districts of the country. At present, with the latest move of the government, 344 districts selling the highest gold of the country will come under the purview of mandatory hallmarking.

Important meeting will be held on Thursday

According to government sources, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Bureau of Indian Standards is going to hold a meeting on Thursday with the Jewelers Bullion Association and other key stakeholders to implement this proposal.

The mandatory requirement of HUID i.e. Hallmark Unique Identification for gold jewelery has come into force from April 1 this year. In March itself, Director General of BIS, Pramod Kumar Tiwari had told CNBC TV18 that the possibility of bringing gold under mandatory certification is being actively considered with an aim to improve quality. He also said that the government may bring an order to mark the weight of gold sold in the retail market.

What will be the effect on the general public

The general public already has a large number of old hallmarked gold jewellery, which the BIS had clarified will not be affected as the HUID is valid only for sellers and not for general consumers. On the other hand, mandatory hallmarking will ensure that customers are getting gold of the same purity as the money they are paying for.
