Bank Strike: Bank unions have announced a two-day nationwide strike from March 24 over various demands including a five-day work week and adequate recruitment in all departments. The strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), a joint organization of nine bank employee unions, also aims to fill the posts of employee/officer directors in public sector banks (PSBs), so that the workload in banks can be reduced.

In a statement issued by UFBU on Friday, it was said that after due discussion and deliberation, it has been decided to start an agitation program with a two-day consecutive strike on 24 and 25 March 2025.

The demonstration will begin on February 14.

UFBU has decided to start the protest from February 14. On this day, protests will be held in the evening in district headquarters across the country. After this, a sit-in will be held in front of Parliament House on March 3, where a memorandum will be submitted to the Finance Minister and DFS.

Apart from this, UFBU has demanded immediate withdrawal of the recent instructions of the Department of Financial Services (DFS) on performance review and performance-based incentives, which ‘threaten job security and create division among employees. The employee unions also demand that the limit of gratuity be increased.

Their demand is that the Gratuity Act should be amended to make the maximum limit Rs 25 lakh and it should be made in line with the scheme of government employees. Also, it should be made free from income tax.

Autonomy of the board weakened: UFBU

The UFBU alleged that the DFS’ micro-management of public sector banks on policy matters has weakened the autonomy of the board. It also demanded resolution of pending issues with the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and amendment of the Gratuity Act to increase the limit to Rs 25 lakh on the lines of the government employees’ scheme and exemption from income tax.

The members of UFBU include All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE), All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA) and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI).
