Banks will remain closed on Friday 15 November

Banks will remain closed in Punjab, Delhi and other states on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti on 15 November 2024. This day is extremely important for the Sikh community, as it marks the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab, is celebrated on the day of Kartik Purnima. Most states have a holiday on this occasion. Due to this, banks, schools and government offices will remain closed in most states.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the first Guru of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. This holy day falls on Kartik Purnima. Guru Nanak Dev Ji gave the message of unity, brotherhood and truth in the society. The main objective of his teachings was to serve humanity, eradicate social discrimination, and maintain equality towards all religions. On this day, kirtan, prabhatpheri and langar are organized in the Sikh community, especially in gurudwaras, in which people of all religions participate enthusiastically.

Kartik Purnima and Rahas Purnima

The day of Kartik Purnima is considered extremely sacred in Hinduism. This day is also celebrated as ‘Dev Diwali’ and it is believed that on this day Lord Shiva killed Tripurasura, in commemoration of which the gods lit lamps in heaven. Ganga bath on the occasion of Kartik Purnima has special significance, because it destroys sins and leads to the attainment of virtue. Rahas Purnima, on the other hand, has special significance in the state of Odisha. It is dedicated to the special worship of Lord Jagannath and his mysterious form, in which the Lord is adorned with grand decorations and special rituals are performed.

Banks will remain closed on Saturday in these states of the country

November 15 (Friday): Guru Nanak Jayanti/Kartik Purnima – Banks closed in Mizoram, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and other states.

November 17 (Sunday): Holiday.

November 18 (Monday): Banks closed in Karnataka for Kanakadasa Jayanti.

November 23 (Saturday) : Fourth Saturday and Senkut Snei Festival in Meghalaya.

November 24 (Sunday): Banks closed across the country.
