Lhabab Duchen will be celebrated on 22 November, which is an important religious occasion associated with Tibetan Buddhism. On this day, Buddhists perform worship and religious rituals to commemorate the event of Lord Buddha returning to Tibet. This festival is celebrated with great pomp especially in Sikkim. Banks will be closed in Sikkim on this day. Apart from this, government offices, schools and colleges will also remain closed. The people of Sikkim traditionally celebrate this day keeping it in religious significance. Thus, banking services will not be available in Sikkim on Friday, November 22.

23 November 2024: Seng Kut Snem – Banks closed in Meghalaya and Sikkim

Seng Kut Snem will be celebrated on 23 November, which is the main festival of the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya. This festival is very important for the Khasi community, who celebrate this day honoring their cultural heritage and traditions. Banks will remain closed in Meghalaya on this day. Apart from this, banks will also remain closed in Sikkim on November 23, as this day is Lhabab Duchen for Sikkim as well as the fourth Saturday of the month. Fourth Saturday is a bank holiday in many states of India, so banks have a general holiday across the country on this day.

24 November 2024: Lachit Divas – Holiday in Assam, along with Sunday

Lachit Divas will be celebrated on 24 November, which is a historic day for the state of Assam. This day is celebrated to honor the valor and important role of Lachit Barphukan, the great warrior of Assam. Lachit Barphukan defended Assam in the Battle of Saraighat against the Mughals in 1671. This day is a government holiday in Assam, and various events and programs are organized across the state on this occasion. Apart from this, due to Sunday on November 24, all banks across the country will have a weekly holiday. Thus, on November 24, there will be a holiday on Lachit Divas as well as Sunday in Assam, and all banks will remain closed.

States affected by the closure of banks from 22 to 24 November

Thus, bank holidays from 22 to 24 November will be three consecutive days in some states. Notably:

  • November 22: Banks closed in Sikkim due to Lhabab Duchen.
  • November 23: Banks closed in Meghalaya due to Seng Kut Snem, banks closed in Sikkim too (being fourth Saturday).
  • November 24: Banks closed in Assam on account of Lachit Divas, as well as all banks across the country on account of Sunday holiday.

Things to keep in mind:

1. Avail online banking: If you need to transfer money or withdraw funds in an account, you can use the facilities of online banking. Platforms like internet banking, mobile apps and UPI will continue to work during this period.

2. ATM services: Even though bank branches remain closed, ATM machines and debit/credit card services will be available as usual. You can withdraw cash using these facilities.

3. Checks and drafts: If you have to deposit a check or draft, you will have to wait for the banks to open. These tasks may get delayed due to the banks being closed from 22 to 24 November. Therefore, get this work done before these dates.

4. Banking branch timings: Some bank branches work according to their holidays. No documentation process will be done in bank branches during these three days, but if your work can be done through digital means, then you will not have any problem.

How to prepare?

If you have to deal with any bank related work on these dates, it would be better if you get it done before 21 November. If you are not able to postpone any important work between 22, 23 or 24 November, then use online options.

  • Internet banking: You can use your bank’s internet banking service to do online transactions.
  • UPI and mobile wallets: You can also make payments using UPI and other mobile wallets like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm.

If you have to do any banking work due to bank holidays on 22, 23 and 24 November, then plan in advance about these three days. Especially in states like Sikkim, Meghalaya and Assam, where banks will be closed for three consecutive days, you have to ensure in advance that any of your important banking work is not affected on these dates.
