Delhi-New York Direct Flight: Making its debut on the ultra-long haul international route, Tata Group-owned Air India’s flagship aircraft A350-900 has started flying on the Delhi-New York direct route from November 1.
The airline announced this on Friday. Earlier, the 316-seater aircraft in three classes – 28 business, 24 premium economy and 264 economy class seats was operating on the long-haul London-Delhi route. It has joined the fleet in December 2023.
Flights with a flight duration of 16 hours or more are considered long-haul destinations like Delhi-New York. A350 aircraft will now fly on these routes.
Announcing the introduction of the A350-900 on the Delhi-New York route, Air India said the Delhi-New York flights will be operated by the larger A350 aircraft from January 2 next year. Air India currently has six widebody A350-900 aircraft in its fleet of 140 aircraft.
Feedback and experience of Delhi-London Heathrow route has been positive
Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Air India said, “The A350 is not just another aircraft for Air India. It is a symbol of the ‘new Air India’ that has come through our 5-year Vihaan.AI post-privatisation transformation programme. On guest feedback on the aircraft and the new customer experience, he said, “It has been exceptionally positive since its launch on the Delhi-London Heathrow route in September. So we are now excited to introduce it to New York.” The deployment of the A350 on the Delhi-New York route comes at a time when the private carrier has temporarily reduced at least 60 flights in its US operation as it does not have enough aircraft in the fleet to fly the full schedule.
Earlier the company had cancelled more than 60 flights
CNBC-TV18 was the first to report that the airline has cancelled over 60 flights to Washington, Chicago, New York, Newark and San Francisco due to delays in the return of some planes because of heavy maintenance and supplies.
Air India said that with the launch of the A350 to the US, the airline is now the only Indian airline to operate non-stop flights between India and the US with private suites in the business class.
In addition, the airline has introduced its new premium economy cabin on the Delhi-New York (JFK) route. The company said it will soon introduce on-board Wi-Fi facility.
