Amidst efforts by Tata Group airline Air India to expand its global network and market share, its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson on Saturday said the airline will introduce economy class with more amenities on long-haul international flights.

Campbell Wilson said that there are opportunities for India and Air India to play a major role in the world’s airline sector over the next decade. He said that Air India will increase its market share on domestic and international routes to at least 30 percent. The airline is working on restructuring the company and has plans to increase its fleet as well as network in the world in the next five years.

Wilson said, ‘Carts, curtains, seat cover-cushions will be changed in the near future. We have completely changed the menus in domestic flights, besides starting a more convenient economy class in long distance international flights from next month. Air India was the first government company which was recently bought by Tata Sons.

Due to lack of funds and spare parts, the aircraft of the airline were not in operation for many years. About 20 such aircraft have been repaired. Apart from this, the lease of 30 additional aircraft has been fixed, which will be available in the next 12 months, their supply will start from next week. According to the company, talks are on with Boeing, Airbus and engine makers for ordering new generation aircraft.

Air India has expanded its operations domestically and internationally and has introduced more flights to Vancouver, Sydney and Melbourne.
