Passport Rules Change: The Ministry of External Affairs has made a major change in the rules regarding passport. The ministry has released the list of documents that will be accepted as date of birth certificate for making a passport.

In the notification issued by the ministry, it has been told that now only these documents will be accepted for making a passport. Apart from these, applications made with any other document will not be accepted.

The notification issued by the Ministry of External Affairs on February 24 has amended the rules related to submission of proof of date of birth for issuance of passport. According to the new rules, the only valid proof of date of birth for children born on or after October 1, 2023 will be the birth certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths or Municipal Corporation or any other authority authorized under the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1969.

If born before October 2023 then…

  • Birth certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths or Municipal Corporation or any other authority authorized under the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1969.
  • Transfer or School Leaving Certificate issued by a recognized School with date of birth of the applicant or Matriculation Certificate issued by a recognized Educational Board.
  • Apart from this, Permanent Account Number (PAN) card issued by the Income Tax Department which contains the date of birth of the applicant.
  • A copy of the service record or pay pension order (both applicable to Government servants only), attested or certified by the officer in charge of the administration of the concerned Ministry or Department, containing the date of birth of the applicant.
  • Driving license issued by the Transport Department of the concerned State Government, containing the date of birth of the applicant.
  • Election Photo Identity Card issued by the Election Commission of India containing the date of birth of the applicant.
  • Policy bond issued by Life Insurance Corporation of India or public companies containing the date of birth of the insurance policy holder.

There is only one way to get a passport.

According to the information released by the Ministry of External Affairs, there is only one way to get a passport. Whether someone wants to get a new passport or renew the old passport, one will have to apply for this by visiting the official website. At present, the ministry has changed the rules only regarding the date of birth certificate and no other rules have been changed yet.
