Canada has given such power to its immigration officers, which has worried Indian immigrants. In fact, the Canadian government has made its immigration rules stricter than before.
Under this change, border and immigration officials have been given the right to cancel temporary residence documents in Canada such as study and work permits. These changes have come into effect from January 31. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada i.e. IRCC has called it an improvement in the immigration system.
Unlimited powers to officials
Changes in immigration rules give Canadian authorities the power to cancel a person’s temporary residence visa if they believe that the person is providing false information or has a criminal record.
Thousands of Indians go to Canada
- Apart from America, Canada is also one of the favorite countries of Indians. According to a statistic, currently around 4.27 lakh Indian students study in Canada. The number of Indian tourists visiting Canada is also in lakhs. Only between January and July 2024, visitor visas were issued to 3.65 lakh Indians.
- A study visa or work permit can also be revoked if the border officer suspects that a person will not leave Canada after the expiry of his stay. Obviously the new rules will have a profound impact on students and workers traveling from India to Canada.
Why was this change needed?
Canada has amended the rules at a time when the number of applications for study permits has increased rapidly. In fact, Canada is trying to ensure that temporary residents strictly follow the conditions of the visa. The authorities had the power to reject applications earlier as well, but these were very limited.
