Passport is not only a necessary document for traveling abroad, but it is also used as a proof of address and identity. Like Aadhar card, PAN card and ration card, passport has also become an important document.

Since passport has a certain validity, it is necessary to renew it after its expiry. Both online and offline means are available for passport renewal. Let us know the complete process of getting it renewed.

Passport renewal process

  1. Visit the website:
    To renew your passport, first visit the official website of Passport India https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in .
  2. Select Reissue Passport:
    Click on the “Reissue Passport” option on the website.
  3. Fill the online application:
    Click on “Click here to fill the application form online” and fill all the required information.
  4. Save and Submit:
    Save or submit the application.
  5. Pay Fee:
    Select “Pay and Schedule Appointment” option and deposit fee through online payment.
  6. Schedule an Appointment:
    Book an appointment at Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).
  7. Verify information:
    Visit the Passport Seva Kendra at the scheduled time and get the required information verified.
  8. Receive Passport:
    After the verification process, the new passport will be sent to your address within 7 days.

Documents Required for Passport Renewal

  1. Old Passport (Original Document)
  2. Self-attested copy of first and last two pages of passport
  3. Self-attested copy of ECR/Non-ECR page
  4. Self-attested copy of any observation page on the passport
  5. Self-attested copy of validity extension page for Short Validity Passport (SVP)
  6. Documents for cancellation of short validity passport issued for any reason

Types of passports

  1. Ordinary Passport (Blue):
    Issued to Indian citizens travelling for business, education or holiday purposes.
  2. Diplomatic Passport (Maroon):
    This passport is issued only to diplomats and high-level government officials for their official work.
  3. Official Passport (White):
    This passport is issued to Indian Government officers who travel abroad on official work.
  4. Orange Passport:
    This passport is issued to citizens falling under the ECR (Immigration Check Required) category. It is designed to protect against exploitation and fraud.
