The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has issued a new circular on November 29, 2024, eliminating the mandatory Aadhaar linking for some employees. This rule will apply to special categories who are unable to obtain Aadhaar under the current circumstances.
Now these categories of employees can get their claims settled without linking Aadhaar:
International employees who have completed their assignments in India and could not get Aadhaar. Indian citizens who have permanently settled abroad and have taken foreign citizenship.
Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan who are employed in India under the EPF Act but do not have Aadhaar. In the process of claims, the identity of these employees will be ensured through passport, citizenship certificate and other necessary documents. For this, PAN, bank account details and other necessary details will also be verified.
EPFO has said that the officers will settle all the claims after verification with utmost care. In cases where the balance is more than Rs 5 lakh, verification can also be done from the employers. All payments will be made through NEFT.
Although creating a UAN will remain mandatory, the condition of Aadhaar linking has been removed. The purpose of this change is to simplify and make the claim settlement process more effective for employees who are unable to obtain Aadhaar.
