Aadhaar Card: Are you moving to a new city or have you recently changed your address? If yes, then do not forget to update your new address on your Aadhaar. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is encouraging citizens to review their Aadhaar card information.

Especially those who have not made any update in their Aadhaar card for ten years. For this, UIDAI has also extended its earlier deadline for updating your Aadhaar card for free to December 14, 2024.

According to the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulations, 2016, “An Aadhaar number holder shall update his/her identity as well as address at least once at the expiry of every 10 years from the date of issue of Aadhaar number to him/her.”

UIDAI posted on social media platform X, “UIDAI has extended the facility of free online document upload till 14 December 2024 for the convenience of millions of Aadhaar number holders. This free service is available only on myAadhaar portal. UIDAI is constantly encouraging people to keep the documents updated in their Aadhaar.”

Aadhaar is a unique number and no citizen can have a duplicate number as it is linked to their biometrics. Its biometrics process helps in identifying fake identities.

In a press release issued by PIB on 10 November 2022, it was said, “Citizens who had their Aadhaar issued 10 years ago and have never updated it in the meantime, such Aadhaar number holders are encouraged to update their documents. UIDAI had earlier issued a press release urging people to keep their documents with them. In the recently issued gazette notification, it has also been clearly stated that citizens have to keep doing this after every 10 years. Keeping the documents updated in Aadhaar helps in ease of living, getting better service.”

What is the fee or charge for submitting documents for Aadhaar updation?

Documents can be updated free of cost at the Aadhaar centre. However, if someone updates after the deadline for free update, the applicable fee for that will be Rs 50.
