The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday said that 98.04 percent of the Rs 2000 banknotes have returned to the banking system and only Rs 6,970 crore worth of such notes are with the public. The RBI had announced the withdrawal of the Rs 2000 banknote from circulation on May 19, 2023.

RBI had announced on this date

RBI said that at the close of business on May 19, 2023, a total of Rs 2000 bank notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation. The value of the notes in circulation was reduced to Rs 6,970 crore at the close of business on October 31, 2024. The statement said that thus 98.04 percent of the Rs 2000 notes in circulation till May 19, 2023 have been returned. The facility of depositing or exchanging these notes was available in all bank branches till October 7, 2023. This facility is still available in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank.

When the central bank took out the 2000 rupee bank notes from circulation, people were given the facility to deposit it in any bank branch near them till 7 October 2023. After this, people were given the facility to exchange notes through 19 regional offices of RBI and post.

The facility to exchange the demonetised Rs 2,000 bank note is available in 19 regional offices of the Reserve Bank from 19 May 2023. However, there has been a rush to exchange notes at these offices after 9 October 2023. Rs 2,000 bank notes are also being accepted for depositing in people’s bank accounts since then.

People within the country are also sending Rs 2,000 notes to RBI offices through Indian Post. This money is deposited in their bank accounts. The work of depositing/exchanging bank notes is being done in RBI’s regional offices. These offices are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
