Diwali Bonus: Minutes before the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the dates for assembly elections in Maharashtra on Tuesday (October 15), state Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced Diwali bonus for government employees, kindergarten teachers and Asha workers.
Shinde said all employees of the municipal body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will get a bonus of Rs 28,000 ($333). Meanwhile, kindergarten teachers and Asha workers in the state will get Rs 3,000 more than last year. It is worth noting that on November 8 last year, Shinde had announced a bonus of Rs 26,000 for the employees.
A press statement issued by the BMC said, ‘After discussion between the Chief Minister and the Municipal Commissioner, the following gratuity grants have been announced to the Municipal Corporation officers/employees for Diwali-2024.’
This announcement was made very cleverly, because the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into force as soon as the election dates are announced and remains in force till the results are declared.
It is noteworthy that the Model Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines issued by the ECI, which states how political parties and candidates should behave during election campaign and voting.
Maharashtra election dates
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced during a media briefing on Tuesday that the western Indian state will vote in a single phase on November 20, with results to be declared on November 23. The last date for securing nominations is October 29, while candidates can withdraw their names till November 4.
