The Income Tax Department will find out whether the deduction under 80G has been claimed through fake house rent allowance, bogus donations using the same common email ID or mobile number. Or whether the expenses have been shown in an exaggerated manner. The tax department can conduct a thorough investigation of such income tax returns. The Directorate of Income Tax Systems, which comes under the Ministry of Finance, has issued SOP instructions for such high risk income tax refund cases, which have been made available to assessing officers, TDS charge officers and officers in the investigation wing.

According to a TOI report, the SOP sent to the investigation wing officer states that in the past, refunds have been claimed wrongly by wrongly claiming TDS credit, under-reporting income, over-stating deductions and showing bogus expenses. This case has come to light when it was found that income tax returns have been filed using the same common email ID or mobile phone number. Now it has been forwarded to the nodal officers of the Central Registry Units for further investigation.

In the SOP, tax officials have been asked to use the insight portal, e-filing portal to find out the person who is associated with the common email ID and mobile phone number. Such taxpayers can be issued notices and asked to verify the information related to tax exemption, deduction, and expenses with documents. According to the report, the purpose of this exercise is not to harass taxpayers. If the claim is correct, the case will be closed. And if the refund has been obtained by giving wrong information, then the matter will be investigated further as per the SOP.
