The rules for buying SIM cards have changed. Now users do not have to worry much about buying a new SIM card of Airtel, Jio, BSNL or Vodafone-Idea. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has now made it completely paperless.

If you are now planning to buy a new SIM card or are thinking of changing the operator, then you will no longer have to visit the offices of telecom companies. You will be able to verify the documents required for your SIM card yourself.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced the new rules for SIM cards from its official X handle. Also, users have been asked to keep some things in mind before buying a new SIM card. This new rule of the Department of Telecommunications is to prevent fraud with the personal documents of users. Also, it will be to implement a completely paperless system under Digital India.

New rule of SIM Card

  • The Department of Telecommunications said in its post that while carrying out a major telecom reform, now e-KYC (Know Your Customer) as well as self KYC has been introduced for the users.
  • Users will not have to go to telecom operators to change their number from prepaid to postpaid. Users will now be able to avail the service based on OTP i.e. one time password for this.
  • You will be able to buy a new SIM card without sharing any photocopy or document.
  • This completely digital process of the Department of Telecommunications will prevent misuse of the users’ documents. Now fake SIMs cannot be issued in anyone’s name.

What is Aadhaar based e-KYC and self-KYC?

DoT has introduced the facility of Aadhaar based e-KYC, Self KYC and OTP based service switch in KYC reform. Users will now be able to use only Aadhaar card to buy a new SIM card. Telecom companies will use the Aadhaar based paperless verification feature to verify the users’ documents. This will cost only Rs 1 (with GST).

Not only this, the Department of Telecommunications has also started the facility of Self KYC for users to verify their KYC online. Users will be able to verify their KYC themselves using DigiLocker. If a user wants to switch his number from prepaid to postpaid or from postpaid to prepaid, then he will not have to go to the telecom operator’s office. He will be able to switch the connection through OTP based verification process.
