New Delhi: To curb the rise of illegal e-rickshaws, the Delhi government’s transport department has decided to scrap seized and unregistered e-rickshaws within seven days if their owners do not register their vehicles. Earlier, 90 days were given for this process.

Under the rules, the registration window is 90 days, a transport official said on Friday. But since these rickshaws are illegal, they can be scrapped after seven days.

The transport department official said the seized e-rickshaws will be crushed before being handed over to a registered vehicle scrapping facility. The transport department has taken a new step to register cases against illegally plying e-rickshaws. This month, till August 21, the department seized 1,077 e-rickshaws. This means more than 50 of them were seized every day.

Decision taken under the chairmanship of LG

The decision was taken after a high-level review meeting chaired by LG VK Saxena to take measures to decongest the city. As per estimates, there are 1.2 lakh registered e-rickshaws in the city. However, the actual number of e-rickshaws on the ground is probably double that figure. This calls for a check on their illegal proliferation.

An official said that since unregistered e-rickshaws do not have number plates and hence cannot be challaned online, they violate all transport rules and often ply on roads where they are not allowed. This slows down traffic and causes congestion.
