The Union Cabinet on Friday approved metro rail projects in Karnataka and Maharashtra and five infrastructure projects to improve air connectivity in West Bengal. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said the government has approved infrastructure projects worth about Rs 2 lakh crore since taking charge in June.
He said it has become clear that its priority is to enhance connectivity to drive job creation and economic growth. In the meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, metro rail projects in Bengaluru in Karnataka and Thane and Pune in Maharashtra were approved. Assembly elections are to be held in Maharashtra later this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also posted about these projects on X. He wrote in the post, “It is our constant endeavor to ensure that Maharashtra gets modern infrastructure.”

The third phase of the Bengaluru Metro will be completed at a cost of Rs 15,611 crore. It includes two corridors, JP Nagar to Kempapura and Hosahalli to Kadabagere. The Thane Integral Ring Metro, to be built at a cost of Rs 12,200 crore, will provide connectivity to residential and industrial areas of the city with interchanges provided for Mumbai Metro Rail Lines 4 and 5. The Pune Metro will be built at a cost of Rs 2,954.5 crore. It will be extended from Swargate to Katraj.
The cabinet also approved airport projects at Bagdogra in West Bengal and Bihta in Bihar at an estimated total cost of Rs 2,962 crore. Vaishnaw said a new civil enclave at Bagdogra airport has been approved at an estimated cost of Rs 1,549 crore. A new civil enclave will be built at Bihta in Bihar at an estimated cost of Rs 1,413 crore.
