Brigadier is a one-star rank in the Indian Army. It ranks above Colonel and below two-star Major General. A brigadier is the head of a brigade. Captain: After getting lieutenant promotion or after completing two years becomes captain. The shoulder badge on the uniform of this officer has three stars.
Major: The post of Major is given to officers after working for 6 years, clearing Part B exam or getting promotion. There is only the national symbol of India on their shoulders.
Lieutenant Colonel: The post of Lieutenant Colonel is given after 13 years in the Indian Army or after clearing Part D exam or promotion. They have the national emblem of India and a star on their shoulders.
Colonel: It is from the selection of Colonel or above. 15 years of commissioned service is required for selection and 26 years of commissioned service is required for time-scale promotion. Two stars and the national emblem of India are made on their shoulders.
Brigadier: Meets by post selection. 25 years commissioned service required. Three stars are made in a triangular formation on the shoulder.
Major General: Meets the post selection. 32 years commissioned service required. A star, baton and saber are seen crossing each other on the shoulder.
Lieutenant General: 36 years of commissioned service and gets the post by selection. Officers of this rank are given the post of Deputy Chief of the Army. Under the national insignia on their shoulders, there are batons and sabers crossing each other.
General: The highest active post in the Indian Army. They have a star on their shoulder with the national insignia and a baton and saber crossing each other.
Field Marshal: There have been only two field marshals in the Indian Army till date. One KM Cariappa and the other Sam Manekshaw. On his shoulder is the national insignia of a lion and below it is a cross baton and saber in a circle of lotus flowers.
