ITR Filing Last Date: Only 6 days are left to file Income Tax Return. So far more than 3 crore returns have been filed. The government has refused to extend the deadline.

The last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for the financial year 2021-22 is approaching. Now only 6 days are left. The Income Tax Department keeps urging taxpayers to file returns on time to avoid inconvenience. Therefore, those who are still waiting for the extension of the deadline should file their ITR at the earliest, as this year the government is in no mood to extend the deadline beyond July 31. 

The Income Tax Department has informed that till July 25, more than 3 crore ITRs have been filed. It also urged people to file their ITR at the earliest, if not filed yet. In a tweet, the Income Tax Department said, more than 3 crore ITRs for the assessment year 2022-23 have been filed on the e-filing portal till July 25, 2022. The due date for filing ITR for the year 2022-23 is July 31, 2022. We urge you to file your ITR here. At the earliest, if not yet filed. #FileNow!”

The taxpayers can claim refund of excess tax paid/deducted during a financial year by filing ITR.

No plans to extend deadline

No plans to extend the deadline for filing income
tax returns The government is not considering extending the last date for filing income tax returns, Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj was quoted by PTI as saying. “As of now, there is no thought of extending the last date of filing,” he said.

In the last financial year (2020-21), around 5.89 crore ITRs (Income Tax Returns) were filed till the extended due date of December 31, 2021.

In the last two financial years, the government had extended the ITR filing deadline to ease compliance for taxpayers battling the Covid pandemic.

How to file ITR for FY 2021-22

  • Income Tax Department has set up an independent portal for e-filing of Income Tax Returns – incometaxindia.gov.in.
  • There are some private entities registered by the Income Tax Department that allow taxpayers to e-file through their websites.
  • Income tax payers can take the help of CA to file their returns. However, they will charge you a fee for it.
