Will the 8th Pay Commission be implemented from January 1, 2026?

The recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission, set up to revise the salaries and allowances of about 50 lakh central government employees and 65 lakh pensioners, are unlikely to be implemented from January 1, 2026. Let us tell you that before this, the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission were implemented in 2016. Then there was a big increase in the salaries of government employees. However, the final decision on the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission has not been taken yet. For this reason, no official announcement has been made on when it will be implemented.

Cabinet approves 8th Pay Commission…

On January 16, 2025, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the constitution of the 8th Pay Commission. This commission will review the pay scales of central government employees and allowances of pensioners. The government has indicated that the recommendations of this commission may bring major changes in the pay structure. Employees and pensioners are hopeful that this commission will give a good increase in salaries.

How much can the salary increase?

If the fitment factor is fixed at 2.08, then the minimum basic salary of central employees can increase from Rs 18,000 to Rs 37,440. Along with this, the pension can increase from Rs 9,000 to Rs 18,720. But if the fitment factor goes up to 2.86, then the salary can increase by 186%. If this happens, then the minimum salary can increase to Rs 51,480 and pension to Rs 25,740.

The Seventh Pay Commission is currently underway…

The government periodically constitutes pay commissions which make recommendations for the pay of all government and public sector employees. It gives recommendations regarding the pay structure of the employees. The first pay commission was formed in 1947 after independence. Since then, seven pay commissions have been implemented. The 7th Pay Commission, constituted in the year 2014, gave its report in November 2015. It was implemented in the year 2016.
