8th Pay Commission: When will the 8th Pay Commission be formed?

Generally, the central government constitutes a pay commission every 10 years. The current 7th Pay Commission was constituted in 2014 and its recommendations were implemented from January 2016. The tenure of this Pay Commission is ending on 1st January 2006. Central government employees are demanding the government to set up the 8th Pay Commission at the earliest so that it can be implemented by January 2026 as the panel will take several months to come up with recommendations.

However, according to reports, the 8th Pay Commission is expected to be constituted in 2025. These reports come after the government has so far denied its formation. According to News 18, a senior member of the employees’ union said that representatives of several central government employees recently met the Cabinet Secretary and put forward the demand for the 8th Pay Commission. The union member said that the secretary said that the year 2026 is far away and it is too early to form the commission now. He said that the 8th Pay Commission is likely to be formed next year.

How much will be the increase in the 8th Pay Commission?

Although the salary of central government employees was increased by about 23 percent in the current 7th Pay Commission, it was increased much more in the previous 6th Pay Commission. However, according to reports, after the 8th Pay Commission, the Minimum Pay Scale may increase to Rs 34,500 compared to the current Rs 18,000.

8th Pay Commission: DA hike formula subject to change

At present the DA hike of central employees is as per the 7th Pay Commission formula. However, the formula may also be revised as the Economic Survey 2024 suggested that consideration should be given to not including food inflation in India’s inflation rate structure. According to News 18, a member of the employees’ union said that there is a possibility of amending the DA increment formula in the 8th Pay Commission.
