18 OTT Platforms BANNED In India: The Indian government has banned 18 OTT services or platforms for publishing obscene and pornography content this year (in 2024). Information and Broadcasting Minister Murugan gave this information in Parliament.

Speaking during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha on December 18, Murugan told the House that the Information Technology (IT) Rules 2021 impose a specific duty on intermediaries to take action against displaying or spreading obscene content. Murugan said that action has been taken against these 18 OTT platforms under the IT Rules 2021.

Murugan said the IT Rules provide a code of conduct for publishers of news and current affairs on digital media and publishers of online curated content (OTT platforms). In response to a question from Shiv Sena-UBT MP Anil Desai, Murugan said the IT Rules of 2021 impose specific due diligence obligations on intermediaries to exercise their due diligence against displaying or disseminating obscene or pornographic content.

According to PTI, Murugan said, “The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken action in coordination with various intermediaries. Under these provisions, 18 OTT platforms have been blocked for publishing obscene and in some cases pornographic content on March 14, 2024.” In response to a separate question, Murugan said that under the Code of Conduct for Digital News Publishers, such publishers are required to adhere to the Press Council of India’s ‘Standards of Journalistic Conduct, Programme Code under the Cable Television (Network Regulation Act, 1995)’.
